Jesus said, "Pray Then In This Way"
The Lord's Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer is central to Christian faith, uniting God’s people in the prayer Jesus taught his disciples (Matthew 6 and Luke 11). It is holy to participate in worshiping God, using the same prayer with sisters and brothers around the world.
The prayer begins: “Our Father” in English, “Vater Unser” in German,“ Padre Nuestro” in Spanish, “Papa Nou” in Haitian Creole. Sarah and I assembled parts of The Lord's Prayer in seven languages. We begin the The Three Days before Easter, today on Maundy Thursday. As you pray the prayer Jesus taught, know you are joined by people in places you have never been and in languages you have never heard.
Matthew 6:9-13 (The Message) “The world is full of so-called prayer warriors who are prayer-ignorant. They’re full of formulas and programs and advice, peddling techniques for getting what you want from God. Don’t fall for that nonsense. This is your Father you are dealing with, and he knows better than you what you need. With a God like this loving you, you can pray very simply. Like this:
Our Father in heaven,
Reveal who you are.
Set the world right;
Do what’s best—
as above, so below.
Keep us alive with three square meals.
Keep us forgiven with you and forgiving others.
Keep us safe from ourselves and the Devil.
You’re in charge!
You can do anything you want!
You’re ablaze in beauty!
Yes. Yes. Yes.
